To respond to the period of history when the Barracks buildings were used as housing, textile artist Rachel Ballard ran a series of embroidery sewing workshops.

Participants created stitched postcards in the style of the embroidered sewing pieces that hung over fireplaces in houses of the period.

Using simple sewing and embroidery stitches participants explored how to transfer images from photographs onto fabric to create textile postcards reminiscent of postcards sent home by soldiers when they went to war.

The postcards depicted images of the people who used the barracks from past and present, along with elements of their trades and the building. Some of the sessions took place in Hollies Haberdashery, a business based in the Barracks, and all materials for this element of the project were purchased from there.
